IPC Media Awards Major Printing Contract to Wyndeham Group

Wyndeham Group announces that IPC Media has selected Wyndeham as the principal print supplier for its Southbank division and awarded a range of other titles to the Group following the recent tender process. The three year contract which commences in July 2010, includes the renewal of the existing titles produced by Wyndeham Group, and reconfirms Wyndeham’s position as the second largest supplier of web offset printed products in the UK.

The contract consists of 45 of IPC’s most prestigious, market leading publications including monthly titles such as Southbank’s Marie Claire, InStyle, Ideal Home, Livingetc and Wallpaper. The deal also includes publications from IPC Inspire and IPC Connect including NME, Look and TV & Satellite Week, and a number of bi-monthlies. The work will be produced across the Group’s two web offset plants, Heron in Maldon, Essex, and Southernprint in Poole, Dorset. Impact, the Group’s specialist cover printer in Basingstoke, and a long established cover printing partner of IPC, retains the contract to produce all the covers included in the tender.

Jasper Scott, Manufacturing Director, IPC Media said: “When we first put the magazines out to tender we had two interesting proposals from Wyndeham and Southernprint. Whilst both these were attractive, the merging of the two companies has created a major magazine printing group that presented a real, credible alternative for IPC in terms of the scale of its operation and the people involved.”

Charlie Meredith, Managing Director, IPC Central Operations added: “I’m delighted that we have been able to complete this tender process and award the business to Wyndeham, which offers a strong and thoroughly modern portfolio of print solutions that best suit our titles moving forward.”

Paul Utting, Chief Executive, Wyndeham Group said: “The decision by IPC Media to move these titles to Wyndeham demonstrates the strength of our offering, and the compelling range of integrated, end-to-end production solutions for the magazine publishing industry. This contract provides a solid foundation for the Group’s future development and is a big vote of confidence on the plans we have for the business.”

Wyndeham unveils new version of emagine Online Production System

The latest version of emagine, the award-winning Online Production System, will be officially launched at Publishing Expo, Olympia 2, on 24-25 February 2010.

emagine is the magazine production system of choice for publishers, with over 1400 users using the system to create, manage and deliver magazine titles through its totally integrated production functionality.

The beta version of the system, which has been available for review by current users was extremely well received, boasting many new features, modules and upgrades throughout the system. With the fully redesigned and intuitive menu system, emagine is even faster and easier to learn and use. Users can quickly and easily navigate throughout the entire system.

New system features include:

Ad Booker Module - can interface with many existing external ad booking systems, removing the need for publishers to double enter booking data.

Ad Chaser Module - an automated copy chasing system that takes complete control of this previously time consuming process once an ad is booked into the system.

E-Mag Digital edition - the all-new page-turner is now faster and displays a full screen view with zoom capability. Automatically created in real-time as pages are processed, this allows advertising, editorial, design and production teams to instantly see how pages flow, and quickly identify and correct any editorial / advertising clashes. Additionally, titles produced through emagine can now be published on-line instantly, with the option of adding rich media content

Live KPI reporting – gives publishers access to live production data through pie chart displays or export all production data as flexible Excel spreadsheets.

Status Icons have been completely redesigned and now adopt a consistent, colour coded approach, to clearly show a failed, warning or approved page status.

Les Pipe, Business Development Director, Wyndeham Group said: “We’ve been listening to our customers and the market place as a whole and, as a result, we’ve improved and redesigned emagine from the ground up. The latest version is the single, integrated system that publishers need to create, manage and deliver their titles, streamlining the entire production process to deliver real time and cost savings.”

Wyndeham Group and emagine are located on stand A196 at Publishing Expo which takes place on 24-25 February 2010 at Olympia 2. emagine LITE, the free entry level version of the system will also be launched at Publishing Expo.
Debbie Read, the former Group Production Director at Bauer Media, has been appointed to the new role of Group Procurement Director of Wyndeham Press Group and Southernprint.

The combined Wyndeham and Southernprint group’s annual expenditure on external products and services is over £50 million.
Southernprint and Wyndeham announce new management team for web offset division

28th August 2009

Following the recent acquisition of Southernprint, Walstead Investments announces a number of changes to the management team of the Southernprint and Wyndeham web offset businesses.

As a result of these changes Lee Godwin, Sales Director; Daniel Barnett, Customer Service Director; and Paul Toms, Operations Director, will assume responsibility for these functions at Wyndeham Heron and Wyndeham Impact in addition to their existing roles at Southernprint. Daniel Barnett and Paul Toms will now report directly to Paul Utting, and Lee Godwin will report to Dave Emeny, Wyndeham Group Sales Director. Ian Tarry’s role as Group Operations Director remains unchanged. Charles Jarrold, Managing Director of Southernprint has decided to leave the company and will depart after an agreed handover period.

Paul Utting, Chairman of Southernprint and Chief Executive of Wyndeham Press Group said: “This reorganisation is in line with our strategy to have boards of directors responsible for a number of compatible companies rather than individual sites. I am therefore delighted that Lee, Daniel and Paul have agreed to take on these wider roles which will build upon the strengths of the group’s three web offset businesses. Following a group wide review we are disappointed not to have found a suitable role for Charles. We would like to wish him all the best for the future.”

Charles Jarrold, Managing Director of Southernprint, said: “Paul Utting and I have spent a considerable amount of time reviewing how the Southernprint management structure should be developed following the acquisition by Walstead. Southernprint has a very strong management team and I am proud that these individuals have been rewarded with more senior roles within the Walstead group. Whilst I am sorry to be leaving I fully support the changes and believe they represent the best opportunity for the business.”

Wyndeham owner buys Southernprint

28th July 2009

Walstead Investments, the owner of Wyndeham Press Group, has acquired Southernprint from Newsquest Media Group. The deal was completed on 27 July.

Southernprint employs 330 staff and operates five web offset presses including a Lithoman IV 64/72pp at its printing facility in Poole, Dorset.

Financial backing for the acquisition was provided by Leumi ABL, together with £2 million from Cigala LLP, an investment vehicle of Walstead directors Mark Scanlon, Richard Fookes and Stephen Hargrave.

Following this transaction, the enlarged Walstead group, consisting of Wyndeham Press Group and Southernprint, will vie with St. Ives as the second largest manufacturer of magazines in the UK. Turnover is more than £100 million and 900 staff are employed across eight operations.

Charles Jarrold remains as Managing Director of Southernprint and will join the Wyndeham Press Group board. Paul Utting, Wyndeham’s Chief Executive and Walstead director, and Andy Page, Wyndeham’s Group Finance Director, have been appointed directors of Southernprint.

Paul Utting commented: “Southernprint was a non-core subsidiary of Newsquest. However, it will form an important part of our business and will be a key component of our long-term strategy. Charles and his team have an outstanding reputation for delivering quality product and high levels of customer service. We will now work on the opportunity to combine Southernprint and Wyndeham into the leading and most focussed web offset and sheet-fed printer of magazines and commercial publications in the UK. Our new investors and funders understand our strategy and, as demonstrated by this acquisition, want to support our future development.”

Charles Jarrold commented: “By incorporating Southernprint into a larger, print-focussed group we will be better placed to build on the substantial progress the business has made in the last few years. By joining with Wyndeham, we will be able to offer a greater range of services and technologies for the benefit of our customers.”

Mark Scanlon, Chairman of Walstead, commented: “This sector has been and continues to be ripe for consolidation. There are just too many unprofitable printers with spare capacity chasing diminishing volumes of work. I anticipate there will be more deals like this resulting in fewer but larger players in the web offset market. Publishers will be better served if there are stronger printers that can deliver sustainable services underpinned by healthy balance sheets. When this market equilibrium is achieved we will then see the long overdue reinvestment in people and technologies needed to stabilise the industry. We expect Walstead to play a significant part in the evolution of the sector.”
